My submission for Blind Go—an ensemble-cast video about the various criss-crossing paths that the characters have chosen to walk, featuring a hug compilation at the end. :) Tap the CC button for English subtitles.

I don't really have a lot of feelings about this, but I relistened to the full song recently and now I appreciate my past self's audio choices? I'd spliced together all the chorus variations from different sections of the song, so the chorus in the video comes off as overly long but I think it kiiiiinda works when it ends on the big, sweeping instrumental break.

The song is 夜空中最亮的星 (Brightest Star in the Night Sky) by Escape Plan. As I was looking for cover versions I could possibly use I ran into Yisa Yu's performance which was absolutely ethereal and went straight into my personal playlists... Wish there was a full version!

I still ended up using with the original studio version by Escape Plan because the lyrics were more complete and the vibes more appropriate. ^^;

I was pretty satisfied with the lyric translation at the time I wrote it, for the simple reason that at that it looked like it was done by a human person. It's a fairly straightforward song but sometimes you have to hang on to the little things.

Translation "draft":

I never refer to these when I'm actually subbing btw (I prefer to translate as I'm watching my own vid), it's just a good way to organize my thoughts and consider how else I can edit my vid.

Gu Yu fanvid set to 安和桥 (Anhe Bridge), a song about halcyon days and memories of being loved.

Prompt from [archiveofourown.org profile] jianghuchild: "Gu Yu-centric. Something that explores his character, especially his inferiority complex, his pride, his sort of 可怜之人必有可恨之处 type of thing." + 安和桥 vibes + "If you feel so inclined to make it shippy with Jiang Xueming I would love that too but no pressure"

This was such a great song suggestion from the requester herself! I got all the feels reading the lyrics and found it perfect for a number of Hikaru no Go characters. ;__; I tried to squeeze in as many shippy moments as I could (as requested) but the gen / Go Club feelings won out haha. I love them!!! So much!!!

There were a couple of lines in the lyrics I wasn't sure I understood, so I'm afraid I might have mistranslated them. Thankfully my audience of one doesn't need subs???

-

One last request left, with a week (and a whole weekend) to spare, which means I might end up dropping the ball on it. I feel bad for the requester already ajsksdfpa;sj;

I did these back in September but I was going through my works this year and thought I'd round them up for archiving purposes...

Note: Dailymotion doesn't appear to automatically display external subtitles, so you have to tap the captions icon (bottom right) or gear icon (upper right).

SO many feelings about this performance and how much Tank is leaning on the cast to help him get through it—and Ella, Zhang Jie, and Penny giving him the best support. He was a nervous wreck beforehand and utterly relieved afterwards. (;へ:)He nailed it, though!!!

Lol I meant to do my August roundup (since I consumed a fair amount of media), but, as usual, I got derailed by ZXC... and the utter delight/relief that there are other people translating and making lyric videos of his songs lmfao (he has an upcoming minialbum and is gradually dropping the tracks)

This is the most straightforward translation with some personal touches, so it's easy to get the full picture + I think it's a good glimpse of what native speakers hear when the song is playing.

    By [tumblr.com profile] fwoopersongs

YJTC/fwoopersongs likes to preserve as much as the wording and sentence structure as much as possible while interpreting the text, and I find this approach extremely useful when I want to understand everything that's going on in the song, especially because she's not limited by character count and has the ability to express everything fully (for example, "a version of me" for 某个我 which I wouldn't have thought of haha).

I sometimes get people retranslating my ZXC fansubs into other languages (with my permission), and as touching as it is, their trust in me wakes up my impostor’s syndrome, so I deeply wish I could shove YJ's song translations at them so they can refer to it lol. (One of them translates to Persian and does directly contact me for clarifications, which I think is very sweet! I’m not sure how active she is now, but at least for this song I have someone else’s line-by-line translation on hand as a resource.)

    Mine:

This is half fanvid (using stock videos as well as clips from ZXC's works), half fantranslation, so it's very much interpretative. I tend to veer off original phrasing, and mostly I am okay with that because I'm used to working with contemporary songs and reading song translations... But a recent round of cnovel translation wank has made me second-guess myself again haha :')

Anyway I still love my lyric video thumbnails hehe

text version of lyrics + translation for comparison, bc it fascinates me )

    Technical stuff

    Cons:
Can no longer upload Our Inn fansubs to Youtube (which would be fine if they subbed extra eps, or if they just let me post subbed clips of ZXC singing!!!)

    Pros:
Trying out new platforms and learning new things. \o/

  • Dailymotion: seems more embeddable than Vimeo, but its interface is kind of terrible?

This is what my Youtube post looks like, so my subscribers can see that I uploaded a video somewhere else:
screencap of a Youtube community post linking to an off-site video with an accompanying GIF

  • Captionfy: This is an off-Youtube platform that allows you to add your own subs to Youtube videos, and for people to watch those videos with your subs. Additionally, you can then download the subs and upload them to Youtube yourself (if you were subbing your own content). The subbing interface is 10x better and more useable than Youtube's, AND allows for collaboration—I haven't tried the "teams" function myself, but this is very good to know about since I've had people reaching out to me to collab. 😂 However, Captionfy was designed solely for Youtube, which from a fansubber standpoint has a host of difficulties that I won't get into lol.

(There were quite a few parts that I wanted to cut from sheer uncertainty, but I decided to just close my eyes and roll with it since it's a quickfire 10-minute interview and literally no one else was going to sub it.)

Yao Chen & Zhang Xincheng, "紫 (Purple)" cover (Our Inn ep 11)

ZXC sounds oddly tinny in this (I assume it's a mixing/post-prod issue) but I really enjoyed this duet and am presently haunting ZJSTV's pages in the hopes that they release the rehearsal video for this haha

PS. I subbed this on Captionfy then dropped the .srt file into Davinci Resolve‘s subtitle track for the hardsubs. :)

Slinking back to Vimeo because Youtube/Tencent auto-blocks the audio for copyright reasons. It seems like Vimeo's embed code now allows you to choose between "responsive" and "fixed". NICE.

This is the song that Zhang Xincheng/Steven Zhang recorded for When You Be Me, a new bodyswap romance cdrama (he's not part of the cast, he's only singing for it). Lyrically I find this way more fitting than the song he recorded for his own bodyswap drama (The Day of Becoming You), which sounded like a generic love song to me. XD

It seems that When You Be Me is yet another drama with an improbably deep lake. XD

NGL, the moment this MV dropped, I instantly downloaded it to my phone and considered the logistics of subbing it during a rally. (I could not, because battery drain haha.)

ETA: Added pinyin softsubs! Tap the CC button and select 中文 to activate and sing along. XD

It's weird to think that I used to be glued to Adobe software to the point that I felt fused to them, and now I can go half a year without creating something new--in this case, it's not really by choice, because ongoing tech issues... But I do spend every successive year trying to chase the drive and hyperfocus of my younger self, which I guess is my version of romanticizing my youth! A lot of the stuff I used to make were really ugly LOL but at least I was adventurous and knew how to do a lot of things. These days I feel like I'm restarting from zero.

Dreamwidth was originally planned to be a casual low-pressure art/fanworks blog but guess what sometimes life gets away from you and suddenly you're a Zhang Xincheng bot. I really wanted to get my life together and hustle but here I am, wrestling with technology and losing gracefully by making my favorite celebrity a means for content creation.

Anyway here's some stuff I did this week (...in a span of 4 days), either because I was testing my problematic computer or because I'm trying to learn to do stuff without a computer (ie. video editing on my tablet and my newly acquired pink wireless keyboard that I bought off a friend). Desktop computer is still my battleground of choice though, as unwieldy as it is. I'm just not hip enough to learn mobile/tablet technology. :(

Zhang Xincheng things (all done on mobile/tablet!)

  • Subbed: 仟 Qian, a Zhang Xincheng original song (you can download an mp3 rip here)

  • Subbed: Zhang Xincheng's performance of an original song that then transitions to Jay Chou's Chrysanthemum Bed: This is a much older video, during his My Huckleberry Friends days. Vocals start out a bit flat, and his piano chord choices in the last bit sound debatable to me... but Chrysanthemum Bed is my favorite Jay Chou (+ Vincent Fang) song ever, so just hearing my favorite actor sing it makes me happy. XD He certainly deserves bonus points for basically remixing the song and having the original verse tie into the feeling of the chorus. And it really is a joy to know that he's improved so much vocally since this video, which was a solid performance featuring piano-playing and catchy composition. ♥

  • Subbed: Zhang Xincheng's douyin where he has to uphold his reputation of being a Jay Chou fan.

I kind of feel like I've been transitioning to video-based fanworks since last year, and maybe I should do a post for... apps (desktop and iOS)... because I've tried quite a few, with needs that are both too specific and casual haha. I've been really impressed with how technology has advanced enough that I can do basic editing + subbing on my phone (even though it makes my phone get hot), and I'm fascinated with the features in mobile apps. A lot of them annoy me because they're more cosmetic effects than function, especially when it comes to captioning/typesetting features... I can see why, and I even think it's cool that they exist, it's just surprising to me that subtitle tracks aren't a thing in iMovie (iOS) and Adobe Premiere Rush (iOS)... though I suppose I haven't used either of those even in desktop form, so I'm not sure if you could have done that on desktop. I did all the editing and captioning in last year's fanvids in Da Vinci Resolve... which sadly does not have a mobile version. Its features were pretty ideal to me. :(
